I ran into a Mark VII over the weekend. It was in remarkable shape, but it was clearly dated. The Mark VIII looks much better and has a more timeless style in my opinion.

I had to look up the Mark VI, and I had forgotten how awful it was. This was not a good use of the Panther platform.

Fun fact, Lincoln took an early production Mark VIII to the Bonneville Salt Flats and ran 180 mph (breaking a record) with minor aero modifications (removed side mirrors, etc). With the stock 295 hp V8, making probably about 250 hp at altitude.

If I didn’t have a kid I’d seriously consider adding a Mark VIII to my stable . They’re a weird car where they kind of fly under the radar yet still look good and are an oddity because so few seem to be around anymore. They have a little bit of straight line performance and get decent MPGs.

I have a regular customer with a shiny dark maroon on, with  nice factory chrome wheels. Everytime I see it I pause to admire it. They are weird cars for sure, but not in a bad way

Based on S550 platform, (or whatever the next gen Mustang platform will be)...

These are super low key sleepers. They came with the same engine you got in the ‘96-98 Cobras, but with a different intake and cams. These were an auto only affair, however, they wake up tremendously with 4.10's, a tune, and especially a stall converter. Pretty much anything you’d do to a Mustang you can do with one of these. Additionally, the previous generation was a fox body and in LSC guise could be had with the H.O. version of the 5.0 found in the Mustang.

I may be one of the only people here who actually owned one of these ! This was back in the late 90s/early 2000s, so it was still fairly current and modern and fantastic in every way... almost. The transmission would occasionally do some weird shit like bark the tires HARD shifting into second. Or the torque conv erter clutch would chatter on lock-up like one time out of a hundred. Also, if it sat for more than a couple days, the air ride would bleed down and the car would need like 30 seconds to run the compressor and “pick itself up” after you started it. They all did it, so I never worried much about it. Other than those little things it was brilliant. It rode great, was insanely quiet on the highway. G reat stereo. Great seats, too. Best I ever sat in. The engine sound inside was sublime. It was like a cross between a Mustang Cobra and a first gen Infinity Q45. Oddly, that was the main complaint all the magazines had about it!

All that said, I’m not sure I’d want to own one today. While it was a rocket “back then” , almost any F150 would walk away from it today. On the other hand, n othing   today rides as well as that Mk8 did. I’d be terrified of what it would take to keep the air suspension working now that the spares supply is probably exhausted ...

Fun fact: You can adjust the position of the air ride wheel position sensors and lower a Mk8 for free! Mine was probably about 3/4 inch lower than stock and it looked perfect.
